Home visits are at the discretion of the Doctor and are reserved for terminally ill patients, truly housebound patients whose condition would deteriorate if they travelled to the surgery, patients in nursing/residential homes or those patients who are deemed by the doctor to be too ill to attend the surgery.
Where the patient or relative has doubts, they should talk to a health care professional and a visit may be agreed.
Visit not an appropriate use of doctor’s time:
Common symptoms in children and adults such as fevers, flu (except swine flu in children under one year of age), cold, cough, sore throat, ear ache, headache, diarrhoea, vomiting and most abdominal pain and adults with back pain, general malaise, abdominal pain etc.
Patients without transport and parents with children should seek the help of family, friends or neighbours.
Any requests for day time visits should be made to reception before 10.00am. Please give the patient’s name, address and telephone number. You will be asked for a brief description of the problem to enable the doctor to determine the degree of urgency.
Each home visit takes four to five times as long as a surgery consultation. Visits are at the discretion of the doctor.
